Fifteen Jets

Airport

London Luton

EGGW · LTN · Europe/London

In short

Why do most private jets to London use Luton?

Because it has no night curfew and it has parking. Luton is the busiest business-aviation airport in the United Kingdom and takes the majority of London's long-haul private traffic — an aircraft arriving from the Gulf at eleven at night can land here and cannot land at Farnborough. The runway is 7,087 ft, which handles everything up to and including heavy jets comfortably.

Handlers

  • Signature Flight Support
  • Harrods Aviation

Handling for a heavy jet runs roughly $2,500$5,500, covering landing, parking, navigation and the FBO.

01Arrival

Getting into the city

Luton is thirty-two miles north of central London. Reckon on forty-five minutes to the West End off-peak and considerably more in traffic, an hour to the City, and around an hour and a quarter to Canary Wharf. The M1 is the whole journey and it is genuinely unpredictable between four and seven in the evening. A helicopter transfer to Battersea takes about fifteen minutes and is worth arranging with the flight rather than on arrival, weather permitting. Trains run to St Pancras in around half an hour but from the main terminal rather than the FBO.

02Handling

On the ground

Signature Flight Support and Harrods Aviation are the two principal handlers, both with their own terminals separate from the airline building. Handling for a heavy jet runs roughly $2,500 to $5,500. Border force clears passengers inside the FBO, usually in under five minutes, and cars can meet the aircraft at both handlers. The general-aviation apron is a proper business-aviation facility rather than a corner of the main ramp, which shows in how quickly the whole thing works.

03Constraints

What can stop you

Parking, and only at specific times. During Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and the British Grand Prix the apron genuinely fills, and aircraft that would normally wait for a same-day return instead reposition empty to Stansted or Oxford — a cost that appears in the quote whether or not it is itemised. Slots are required and are usually available, but not during those weeks at short notice. Luton also sits higher than the other London fields and is more prone to low cloud in winter, which occasionally sends arrivals to Stansted.

The busiest business-aviation field in the UK and the default London arrival for heavy jets. Parking is genuinely scarce during Wimbledon, Ascot and the Formula 1 weekend.

04The field

What this runway takes

Runway length is the constraint that decides which aircraft can use a field at all, and it is the reason a class that suits your distance sometimes cannot use the airport you wanted. London Luton has 7,087 feet, which admits the classes below. Where a class is excluded here, the nearest alternative field is usually the answer rather than a different aircraft.

  • TurbopropsOperates · needs 3,000 ft
  • Very light jetsOperates · needs 3,200 ft
  • Light jetsOperates · needs 3,500 ft
  • Midsize jetsOperates · needs 4,200 ft
  • Super-midsize jetsOperates · needs 4,800 ft
  • Heavy jetsOperates · needs 5,200 ft
  • Ultra-long-range jetsOperates · needs 5,800 ft
  • VIP airlinersOperates · needs 6,500 ft

Minimums are for a typical aircraft of the class at moderate weight and temperature. A hot day, a full cabin or a wet runway all push the requirement up, which is why an aircraft that fits on paper occasionally does not on the day.

Questions

How early do I need to arrive at the airport?
Fifteen minutes before departure at a private terminal, and often less. There is no check-in desk and no security queue. On international departures passport control happens at the FBO, usually in under five minutes. At many airports your car can drive to the aircraft steps.
Can I bring my dog into the cabin?
Yes. Pets travel in the cabin with you on almost all charter aircraft, with no crate requirement and no cargo hold. The constraints are the operator’s policy and the destination country’s import rules — the UK, for example, requires an approved route and documentation regardless of aircraft. Tell us the species, size and destination when you request the quote and we filter to operators who accept them.
How far in advance do I need to book?
Four to six hours is usually enough for a domestic or intra-European leg if an aircraft is already positioned nearby. Intercontinental flights need longer for crew duty time, overflight and landing permits. The genuine constraints are seasonal: Nice and Ibiza in July, Geneva in ski season, and Riyadh at any time because of permit lead times.
How much luggage can I take?
Baggage is limited by volume, not by piece count — around 50 cubic feet on a light jet and 115 on a heavy jet. Skis, golf bags and oversized cases are fine but must be declared when you request the quote, because they can change which aircraft works. Weight matters on long legs: a full cabin plus heavy baggage can shorten range enough to add a fuel stop.
