In short
Why is Geneva difficult in winter?
Parking, not runway capacity. Geneva has a single business-aviation apron and during the ski season and the World Economic Forum it fills completely. Aircraft routinely drop passengers and reposition empty to Lyon, Annecy or Zurich to wait for the return, and that ferry flight is inside your quote. The runway itself is 12,795 ft and takes anything.

01Arrival
Getting into the city
Geneva airport is four kilometres from the city centre — ten minutes to the lakefront and the banking district, which is unusually close for a major airport. For the resorts: Chamonix around an hour and a quarter, Megève an hour and a half, Verbier around two hours, Courchevel and Val d'Isère between two and a half and three. Those figures double on a Saturday in February, when the whole valley moves at once. Helicopter transfer to the larger resorts is available and in peak weeks is the difference between arriving for dinner and arriving for bed.
02Handling
On the ground
Signature Flight Support and TAG Aviation both operate here from the general-aviation terminal on the north side. Handling for a heavy jet is roughly $2,500 to $5,000. Geneva sits on the French border and has a French sector, which occasionally matters for onward road transfer into France — worth mentioning when you book so the handler puts you on the right side. Swiss border control is quick and inside the terminal.
03Constraints
What can stop you
Parking, and it is severe. From late December to early March, and absolutely during Davos week, the apron is full and the repositioning cost is unavoidable rather than negotiable. Booking outbound and return together is the practical answer. Slots are required. Snow closes the airport occasionally and the resorts' access roads more often, so the road transfer rather than the flight is the usual point of failure in January.
Parking is the constraint, not runway capacity. During the ski season and Davos week aircraft routinely drop passengers and reposition to Lyon or Zurich to wait.
04The field
What this runway takes
Runway length is the constraint that decides which aircraft can use a field at all, and it is the reason a class that suits your distance sometimes cannot use the airport you wanted. Geneva has 12,795 feet, which admits the classes below. Where a class is excluded here, the nearest alternative field is usually the answer rather than a different aircraft.
- TurbopropsOperates · needs 3,000 ft
- Very light jetsOperates · needs 3,200 ft
- Light jetsOperates · needs 3,500 ft
- Midsize jetsOperates · needs 4,200 ft
- Super-midsize jetsOperates · needs 4,800 ft
- Heavy jetsOperates · needs 5,200 ft
- Ultra-long-range jetsOperates · needs 5,800 ft
- VIP airlinersOperates · needs 6,500 ft
Minimums are for a typical aircraft of the class at moderate weight and temperature. A hot day, a full cabin or a wet runway all push the requirement up, which is why an aircraft that fits on paper occasionally does not on the day.

Questions
- How much luggage can I take?
- Baggage is limited by volume, not by piece count — around 50 cubic feet on a light jet and 115 on a heavy jet. Skis, golf bags and oversized cases are fine but must be declared when you request the quote, because they can change which aircraft works. Weight matters on long legs: a full cabin plus heavy baggage can shorten range enough to add a fuel stop.
- How far in advance do I need to book?
- Four to six hours is usually enough for a domestic or intra-European leg if an aircraft is already positioned nearby. Intercontinental flights need longer for crew duty time, overflight and landing permits. The genuine constraints are seasonal: Nice and Ibiza in July, Geneva in ski season, and Riyadh at any time because of permit lead times.
- How much does it cost to charter a private jet?
- Roughly $3,200–$4,800 per flight hour on a light jet, $6,000–$8,500 on a super-midsize, $8,000–$11,500 on a heavy jet and $12,000–$18,000 on an ultra-long-range aircraft, plus ground handling at both ends. A short European hop such as London to Nice typically lands between $14,000 and $25,000; Dubai to London on a heavy jet is usually $65,000 to $105,000. Prices move with where the aircraft happens to be that week, which is why we quote a real number per request rather than a rate card.
- What is an empty leg flight?
- An empty leg is a repositioning flight an aircraft has to make anyway — flying empty to collect its next passengers, or home after a drop-off. Operators sell those seats at 25% to 75% below a normal charter. The trade-off is rigidity: the route, date and often the departure window are fixed by someone else’s trip, and the flight can be cancelled if the original charter changes.
- How early do I need to arrive at the airport?
- Fifteen minutes before departure at a private terminal, and often less. There is no check-in desk and no security queue. On international departures passport control happens at the FBO, usually in under five minutes. At many airports your car can drive to the aircraft steps.
