Private jet charter

Geneva

In short

Why is a private jet to Geneva more expensive in winter?

Because of parking, not runway capacity. Geneva has a single business-aviation apron and during the ski season and the World Economic Forum it fills completely. Aircraft routinely drop passengers and reposition empty to Lyon, Annecy or Zurich to wait for the return, and that ferry flight is inside your quote whether or not anyone itemises it. Booking the return at the same time is materially cheaper than arranging it later.

02Demand

Who flies here

Two markets with almost no overlap. From December to March it is ski traffic for Verbier, Courchevel, Mégève and Gstaad, weekend-heavy and booked late. The rest of the year it is private banking, the United Nations and the conference calendar — midweek, booked earlier, and far less peaky. Davos week compresses a season’s demand into seven days and is the single most expensive period of the year.

03The field

Choosing the airport

Geneva itself is the only sensible arrival for the western Alpine resorts, and its 12,795 ft runway takes anything. Sion is closer to Verbier but has a demanding mountain approach that not every operator is approved for. Chambéry serves the French resorts and is cheaper to handle, though its runway limits it to midsize aircraft and below. Zurich is a fallback when Geneva parking is full and adds around two and a half hours by road.

04On the ground

Airports serving Geneva

Geneva sits on the French border and has a French sector, which occasionally matters for onward road transfer into France. Customs at the business-aviation terminal is quick. Ski equipment is the practical constraint on this route rather than passenger count: baggage on a jet is limited by volume, and six sets of skis will not fit in a light jet whatever the seat count says.

05Handling

What it costs on the ground

Handling at Geneva is roughly $2,500 to $5,000 for a heavy jet, but the number that matters on this route is not handling — it is repositioning. When the apron is full, the aircraft flies empty to Lyon, Annecy or Zurich and back, and that ferry appears in your quote as a larger hourly total rather than as a separate line. In peak weeks it can add thirty to fifty per cent to a short sector. Booking the outbound and the return together lets the operator plan to stay, and is the single most effective way to reduce the cost of a Geneva trip.

06Fallbacks

Alternative airports

Sion is closer to Verbier and cuts the road transfer substantially, but it sits in a valley with a demanding approach that not every operator is approved for — worth asking about rather than assuming. Chambéry serves the French resorts and is cheaper to handle, though its runway restricts it to midsize aircraft and below. Annecy is small but pleasant and works for light jets. Zurich is the fallback when Geneva parking is genuinely full: it adds around two and a half hours by road to the western resorts, which is a poor trade unless the alternative is not flying at all.

There is never a second invoice. VAT, de-icing and peak surcharges are shown separately when they apply, before you agree to anything.

A specimen, and marked as one. The distance, block time and price band above are computed for this route by the same model that produces every table on this site. The tail number is deliberately not a real one, and the operator, rating and audit date are shown as the fields they occupy rather than invented — a live reply carries the actual values in each.

And what we commit to

  1. Nothing is charged before the aircraft is confirmed.

You receive the operating carrier’s legal name, its AOC number and the aircraft registration in writing before any invoice or wallet address is issued. If those three things are not in front of you, you have not been asked to pay yet.

  2. If the operator cancels, you choose the remedy — not us.

Aircraft go technical and operators occasionally fail. When that happens before departure you are offered a replacement aircraft on equivalent terms or a full refund, and the choice between them is yours. We do not get to decide that a substitute was good enough.

  3. Crypto refunds return in the same asset, at the USD value originally invoiced.

A refund goes back in the asset you paid, on the network you used, valued at the dollar figure on the original invoice rather than the market on the day. An operator’s problem is not a reason for you to carry a currency loss.

These form part of our terms of business. If any of them changes, the change is dated there rather than made quietly here.

08Questions

Questions about flying to Geneva

How much luggage can I take?
Baggage is limited by volume, not by piece count — around 50 cubic feet on a light jet and 115 on a heavy jet. Skis, golf bags and oversized cases are fine but must be declared when you request the quote, because they can change which aircraft works. Weight matters on long legs: a full cabin plus heavy baggage can shorten range enough to add a fuel stop.
What is an empty leg flight?
An empty leg is a repositioning flight an aircraft has to make anyway — flying empty to collect its next passengers, or home after a drop-off. Operators sell those seats at 25% to 75% below a normal charter. The trade-off is rigidity: the route, date and often the departure window are fixed by someone else’s trip, and the flight can be cancelled if the original charter changes.
How far in advance do I need to book?
Four to six hours is usually enough for a domestic or intra-European leg if an aircraft is already positioned nearby. Intercontinental flights need longer for crew duty time, overflight and landing permits. The genuine constraints are seasonal: Nice and Ibiza in July, Geneva in ski season, and Riyadh at any time because of permit lead times.
How much does it cost to charter a private jet?
Roughly $3,200–$4,800 per flight hour on a light jet, $6,000–$8,500 on a super-midsize, $8,000–$11,500 on a heavy jet and $12,000–$18,000 on an ultra-long-range aircraft, plus ground handling at both ends. A short European hop such as London to Nice typically lands between $14,000 and $25,000; Dubai to London on a heavy jet is usually $65,000 to $105,000. Prices move with where the aircraft happens to be that week, which is why we quote a real number per request rather than a rate card.
