How much luggage can you take on a private jet?
Baggage on a private jet is limited by volume and weight, not by piece count — roughly 50 cubic feet on a light jet and 115 on a heavy jet. There is no per-bag allowance and nothing is weighed at a desk. The practical limit is that a full cabin plus heavy baggage shortens range, which on a long leg can add a fuel stop.
Volume, not pieces
Nobody counts your bags. What matters is whether they fit in the baggage compartment, which on most business jets is a fixed shape at the rear of the aircraft and sometimes not accessible in flight. A light jet has around 50 cubic feet, a midsize around 90, a heavy jet around 115. Soft bags fit better than hard cases in the same volume, which is a genuinely useful thing to know when packing for a light jet.
The awkward items
Skis and snowboards are long rather than bulky, and many light jets simply cannot take them however much space appears to be left. Six sets of skis will typically move you to a midsize aircraft even with four passengers, which is a real cost difference on a Geneva trip.
Golf bags are similar. Bicycles usually need to be boxed and often need a heavy jet. Musical instruments frequently travel in the cabin on their own seat, which is easy to arrange and worth asking about rather than assuming.
Anything unusual — filming equipment, medical devices, firearms for a shoot — should be named when you ask for the quote. Some of it needs a declaration or a permit, and the time to find that out is not at the aircraft.
When weight becomes range
This is the part that surprises people. An aircraft has a maximum take-off weight, and fuel and payload compete for it. A light jet with eight passengers and their luggage may not be able to carry full fuel, which shortens its range — sometimes enough to turn a non-stop into a fuel stop.
On short legs this never matters. On anything approaching the aircraft’s book range it matters a great deal, and it is why the range figures on this site are computed at 85% of book range rather than at the manufacturer’s number.
Loading, access and the shape of the hold
Most business jets have a single baggage compartment in the tail, behind the pressure bulkhead on smaller types and inside it on larger ones. That distinction decides whether you can reach your bags in flight: on a light jet you generally cannot, on a heavy jet you usually can. If you need something during the flight, say so and it travels in the cabin.
The hold is a shape, not a volume. Two bags totalling the stated capacity may not fit if one of them is rigid and long. Soft-sided luggage is materially more efficient, which is why crews quietly prefer it, and on a light jet it can be the difference between everything fitting and a bag travelling separately.
Weight is checked, but not the way an airline checks it. The captain calculates a load sheet using actual passenger and baggage weights before departure, and if the total exceeds what the aircraft can carry with the required fuel, something changes — usually the fuel, which means a stop.
